大人今日就来到了新山百合花园一家以威士忌酒为名的精致酒馆 – Whisky House，里头所陈设的威士忌可谓是市场上非常珍稀的典藏版，再加码给各位透露，此处原来不仅有各式威士忌、鸡尾酒、生啤酒等，还有非常值得一试的美食料理！

If there is any one single spirit that could truly be called a gentleman’s drink, it would be whisky. Gone are the days when whisky was just a fellow’s drink, and the holidays are a time to get together with friends and family. Even when it’s not holiday time, you might want to still check out this specialist bar in Taman Molek for its well-chosen selection for personal perusal or entertaining. Restaurant by day and whisky bar by night, we have discovered a refined drinking den that has a casual, good time vibe that makes this a great spot to mix and mingle.

Sporting a classic British black, gold and red decor, Whisky House is more about relaxing than partying. By day, the restaurant serves a delectable western set menu, but by night, it’s transformed into an exclusive bar with a dignified, plush interior with appropriate lighting and noise levels to suit.
Occupying one of the front row shops below Molek Pine 3, Whisky House promises a laid back experience that comfortably sits around 80-100 people. There’s also an exclusive VIP Room for up to 15 guests to enjoy a little more privacy just behind the obligatory speakeasy style door to match (minimum spending of RM 1,500). The stage is also set for 2 sets of daily live music entertainment to keep mood celebratory and drinks flowing. With its combination of charming ambience and a wide selection of premium whisky, from famous everyday drams to extremely rare vintages, Whisky House certainly looks and feels the part with its dark-wood interiors and impressive showcase of the amber liquid.

一次品尝多国佳酿 The Whisky House Flight
会喝酒并不代表会品酒，大人对于品饮威士忌的纸上认知仅限于在威士忌界极富盛名的 Jim Murray，其著作《Whisky Bible》深入浅出地将威士忌知识普及化，可谓威士忌界的权威。这被人尊称为「生命之水」的烈性蒸馏酒，按照产地可以分为：苏格兰威士忌、爱尔兰威士忌、美国威士忌和加拿大威士忌四大区，而近年来日本威士忌的地位也正逐渐攀升，不可忽视。「大家一般所看见的琥珀色威士忌其实是因为存放在橡木桶的缘故，威士忌原本是透明无色的。」
要在纷繁的威士忌种类中觅得自己钟爱的滋味可非易事，品酒口味本就主观。建议威士忌爱好者们在品饮前需保持味觉灵敏，若进食刺激性食品后才品酒或许会失准。这一系列每一杯50ml的 The Whisky House Flight 乃是店家专为初入门的威士忌爱好者所特选的基本款 (RM98++)，非常适合开酒前先试饮，一旁友人此时笑言 「Drink less, drinks better.」，说的没错！对于初入门者，唯有多方尝试不同的种类才能迅速累积品酒经验，因此可别小看这5杯外观看似雷同、滋味却迥异的威士忌，它们可是代表了苏格兰五区的不同调性。品酒前，负责人再次提醒大人「酒味重并不代表酒精含量高，而且酒精也会随着气温而改变其形色。」，大人这就为看官们列举所尝 (依序左起，每品尝完一种口味后，先喝杯清水漱口接着再尝下一杯):

Our knowledge of whisky aka aqua vitae (“water of life”) is only as good as knowing the existence of the <Whisky Bible> by Jim Murray, arguably the world’s leading whisky guide that contains over 4,600 detailed, professionally analysed and easy to understand tasting notes on the world’s leading and lesser known whiskies. What Jim Murray likes has no relation to what our palate will interpret, but nevertheless, this “bible” is full of great information and serves as an excellent reference. According to the head bartender, there’s no correct way to drink whisky, with some people preferring it neat while some rather it with mixers. Scotland (the spiritual home of malt) and Ireland have long been known for whisky, with America and Canada also coming close but the Japanese whisky is now gaining global popularity. For the uninitiated, all whisky starts off as a clear liquid, and gets its colour from the wood. If one used a wine cask, it does both colours and flavours the whisky which is more influence than just the wood.
For aficionados eager to experience the widest variety of spirits and increase their knowledge along the way without breaking the bank, the bartenders are more than happy to put us up on “blind tasting” to introduce unusual whiskies we most likely have not experienced before, free of any pre-conceived notion of a “brand”, price or age as an indicators of quality, or even a prior experience with a type of whisky. Welcome on board The Whisky House Flight, which contain five whisky samples served in 50ml glasses. According to the head bartender, there are 5 steps to truly appreciating fine whisky, so we were told to pay close attention to the following details:
- Colour (light gold, bright copper, or rich amber in colour?)
- Body (light, medium, or full body?)
- Nose (malty, smokey, fruity, or chocolatey?)
- Palate (softly sweet, rich and fruity, or peppery and spicy?)
- Finish (Does the flavour remain for a long time or does it disappear quickly?)
With so many flights of spirits, including rum and cognac sets too, even the newbie like us will walk away with an enlightening experience, and the bartenders will soon have us nosing like an expert as we compare the different malts to discern their unique characteristics.
威士忌闻香杯 Glencairn Whisky Glass
这由 Glencairn 所制造的威士忌闻香杯，宽大的杯腹能将威士忌的酒香凝聚其中，将酒倒入10分钟后便可将鼻子靠往杯口闻香 (若稍微将酒杯倾斜可见酒液从杯壁流下的酒痕，那就是酒的挂杯)，接着慢慢啜饮让威士忌酒香往口腔里各部位驻留，吞饮下的那一刻咽喉部开始微微炽热，霎那间散发出威士忌魅力无比的“威”力！以上大人们所品尝的 The Whisky House Flight 还真是各有所好，正如之前提及，口味这回事真的很主观。
The Glencairn Whisky Glass is the “revolutionary” whisky glass that really lets one savour the taste and complexity of fine whisky. With the tapered mouth, we are able to really smell all of the nuances the whisky has to offer. Any malt advocate (and even novice like us) will love this glass!
Whisky House 特调鸡尾酒
一起品尝的喜悦何止於五官，男女均等啊！那如果看官们不太习惯威士忌的醇厚口感，不妨试一试这三杯 Whisky House 特调鸡尾酒：
(上图) 这杯以伏特加为基酒，再搭配威士忌特调而成的冰雪鲜红 Strawberry Caprioska 乃店家获奖鸡尾酒饮 (由马来西亚酒店协会 (Malaysian Association of Hotels, MAH) 所颁发)，「喝起来极为顺口舒爽，略带酸甜的口感据说颇获女性青睐！」；
(左下) 那一片意大利青瓜好突出！杯身较高的这杯黄色鸡尾酒名为 Whisky House JB Ginger Lemon，乃店家招牌特调饮料，概念取自以东方的姜与西方的意大利青瓜混搭而成，「视觉与味觉真的皆感觉沁凉无比！一口喝下还能尝到姜的特殊气味。」；
(右下) 这看起来好有酒饮的气势！名为 Whisky Sour 的鸡尾酒乃以香料及威士忌特调而成，杯里白泡沫底下原来有着大体积的冰块镇着呢！溶解速度因而减至最低，毫无悬念地提升了鸡尾酒的口感。上面那一层白色泡沫则是以蛋白搅打而成，「这可不能用吸管来喝哦！想要尝出最真实的滋味当然得直接举杯饮下，有着些许的蛋白味与威士忌巧妙融合后的滋味好特别！」

Straight up, shaken or stirred, the award-winning head bartender is ever ready to mix us the perfect drink. If you aren’t sure what you want, the team will concoct something just for you.
Looking for something refreshing to carry our evening which is still young, the head bartender made us his signature cocktail, comprising Vodka, fresh lime, strawberry puree, brown sugar and topped soda. Voila, the award-winning Strawberry Caprioska is ready in no time, and we were told this is a highly popular concoction with the ladies…
Having impressed our female counterparts with the pink, the head bartender whipped up yet another summer bourbon cocktail that literally “lightened up” our mood, with a generous slice of Italian cucumber adding the finishing touch to the Whisky House JB Ginger Lemon. The ginger and bright lemon juice and the club soda cut the strong, rich bourbon and make the whole thing fizzy, delicious and so easy to drink!
Widely known as the “gentlemen’s drink”, the Whisky Sour is a mixed drink containing whisky, lemon juice, sugar, a hint of spices and (gasp), a dash of egg white to give the drink a foamy head! The egg white softens and blends the lemon flavour, and smooths the drink’s texture on our tongue, we kinda like this ”silky” finishing to our cocktail finale for the evening.

前菜 – 意式香烤培根与蘑菇面包 Bacon & Mushroom Bruschetta
尚未踏入 Whisky House 之前，大人也与许多看官们一样，单听店名必以为这是家专门品尝威士忌的酒馆，殊不知这里原来也推出各色令味蕾惊喜不已的美食。大人今日品尝的正是行政总厨近期为店家全新重塑设计的新菜式！
这道一套4份的意式香烤培根与蘑菇面包 (Bacon & Mushroom Bruschetta, RM18.90) 滋味如何？「Che主厨对温度的敏感度应该相当细腻，毕竟能将面包的脆度掌握得如面包与饼干之间的口感实在太令人惊艳，整体俐落没有丝毫不干脆！香脆的面包缀以微脆喷香的猪肉培根、保有些许原汁的蘑菇与芝士脆粒，必然的咸香迷人，不愧为一道完美的开胃前菜！」
Even if whisky isn’t your thing, Whisky Bar is equally worth stopping by for the Chef’s western-focused menu, with a selection of nibbles to choose from to satisfy both the hungry and the thirsty.
Often served as a snack or appetiser, bruschetta (from the Italian word bruscare, meaning to toast or burn) actually refers to the thick slices of grilled bread that are toasted until slightly crisp and light golden brown. With 4 generous servings, each topped with a mixture of sautéed button mushrooms and bacon, packed in pesto sauce and decorated with a sprig of mint, all we could utter were simply “Mamma mia”, and we polished off every last crumb!

前菜 – 鸡肉香卷 Chicken Roulade
这儿的当家前菜料理当然非这道鸡肉香卷 (Chicken Roulade, RM35.90) 莫属。硕大饱满的鸡胸肉先以各式香料腌制再经真空低温料理多时以保鲜嫩口感，店家巧将肉心部位潜藏自家香浓开心果酱，豆香味十足，接着再被油滋滋的培根毫米无差地紧裹着，一上桌就让人哗然啊！「盘中除了多汁的鸡肉香卷这主角外，一旁的绿叶可是没打算让贤失色。大人还未蘸上店家特制的核桃苹果酱，原味就已如此腴美嫩甜，切下一块点尝后才发现另一层味蕾惊喜！一旁的棕色酱汁也轻而易举让大人侧目，沁入酒精的黑胡椒酱少了一般的张扬，恰如其分中和了所有的甜味，却丝毫没有抢了鸡肉的原味，棒极了！鸡肉、培根、食蔬及每日现做的薯泥，好吃得无法抉择啊！」
The term roulade originates from the French word ‘rouler’ which means “to roll”, so what better way to start our gastronomic journey rolling than this signature starter? The Chicken Roulade is sous vide to perfection, soft and chewy with its naturally juicy goodness, but what really captivated us is the nutty pistachio paste filling that goes hand in hand with the accompanying homemade apple and walnut side Wrapped in bacon and added to the freshly made butter mash with brown sauce reduced with wine and a hint of black pepper spice, this appetiser is absolutely palatable, and we just can’t get enough of it!

主食 – 招牌意大利面 Roman Style Carbonara
这是大人首次尝到有颗水波蛋的意大利面，滋味真是让人期待！这道招牌意大利面 (Roman Style Carbonara, RM24.90) 据闻是老板的最爱，大人不点怎么行？「看似平平无奇的柔软水波蛋里原来有荷兰酱的踪迹！真心美味啊！这还不止，看似浓腻的拌汁竟然与清香扯上关系，原来是以帕玛森乳酪搭以蛋黄，接着香煎培根后再以白酒萃取其滋味，这拌汁所带有的微微酒酸早已掩盖奶腻口感，取而代之的是培根的微香，是道处理得极为特出的意式面食，难怪能掳获老板与饕客的舌尖，立即纳入口袋名单！」
Thank goodness and credit to the chefs, we don’t have to travel anywhere near the Trevi Fountain to find tasty, authentic Roman cuisine, and we heard Jonathan shares our exact sentiments. For a true Roman Style Carbonara, we are not allowed any cream, shallots, onion or any other additions for that matter. To get that creamy consistency, the chefs were able to cook the eggs just right: gently enough so that they don’t scramble, and with enough parmesan cheese to make them rich and savoury. Topped with Hollandaise sauce that’s deglazed with white wine, we have a sure winner that made it to our list of must-order pasta in JB.

主食 – 羊扒香肠 Lamb Cutlets with Chorizo Sausage
尝过了数道全新料理后，大人对这儿的烹调时间掌控得宜与高超的调味功夫不得不俯首称臣。这道羊扒香肠 (Lamb Cutlets with Chorizo Sausage, RM38.90) 同样俘虏了大人的味蕾。「大人一定要先赞一赞这香肠，表皮好脆啊！徜徉在芥末酱上的是从澳洲入口的精选红椒味香肠，超级饱满多汁，一口咬下鲜肉汁在嘴里瞬间喷香爆发，美味一发不可收拾！配角那么出色，大人自是对主角寄予厚望，以原汁原味出击的纽西兰羊扒毫无羊肉的腥膻味，店家自制的腌酱果然不同凡响，均抹在肉身后加以香煎再入烤箱，难怪口感绝佳。特制的薄荷酱与羊肉仿如天生一对般互补，蘸上薄荷酱后将羊肉送入口中，天啊！咀嚼时嘴里还飘着阵阵薄荷风！好清新！大人万幸能在 Whisky House 品尝到如此出色的羊肉与香肠，此时怎能少了酒，是不？」
By now, we were pretty much impressed by the chefs culinary passion and creativity, but they are not letting up with their final serving for the day – Lamb Cutlets with Chorizo Sausage. The premium chorizo was savoury and scrumptious, and the honey mustard sauce provides a lovely balance of sweet and spiciness. Using chilled lamb imported from New Zealand, the cutlets were first pan-seared to perfection, before oven baked to lock in all it’s succulent flavour and creating a wonderfully spiced thin crust. Topped with pesto and mint sauce, all our senses were instantly filled with an intoxicating and unmistakable aroma of the pure essence of lamb that’s truly divine and the perfect way to cap off our night.

大人虽常途经此地，却是初次到访 Whisky House, 之前一直误以为这是个纯品尝威士忌的酒馆，万万没想到里头的餐饮竟处理得如此出色！今日能觅得这一处饮食新聚点，下回呼朋唤友再尝美味无需转场，还真是得感谢密探的大力推荐 😄 ！看官们若下回经过新山百合花园公寓一带，可别错失这家以威士忌酒为名的精致酒馆！当然大人还是得不厌其烦提醒各位，喝酒不开车，开车不喝酒 😊
If you’re ever in Taman Molek and looking for a dram or two, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better place than here. It’s clearly easy to get carried away with such a strong show of whiskies on offer, but it’s good to know that Whisky House, as always, wants you to take away more than just a happy high at the end of the night. Drink wisely my friends, and don’t drive even if you do heed our earlier advice!
