As complicated as wine can be, there are two broad categories into which most wine fits. With an understanding of this simple concept comes a better appreciation of what to expect from the diverse world of wine.
According to Jessica, the Old World refers to winemaking regions (geographically) and grape varietal’s origins that uses traditional winemaking methods, whereas the New World are generally winemaking regions that were discovered much later. Due to the geographical conditions, both Old World (Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Greece, England to name a few) and New World wines (USA, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, India among others) would taste different even if the winemaking methods are similar.
Old World tend to taste milder or lighter in terms of fruitiness, has lower alcohol content, higher acidity and often has more complexity compared to the New World, which may taste riper, higher in alcohol, lower acidity and straightforward in taste.
“if you’re a beginner, you may just simply describe the type of taste you would like from your wine to the sommelier / wine waiter. If available, try to attend any wine tasting events or workshops to venture into knowing the right wines you will like and just enjoy.” Jessica suggested. So, are you ready to taste the difference?
