Located about 700km north of Johor Bahru, Penang is an excitingly diverse island city, crammed with the juxtaposition of locals, expats and travellers, and renowned as a food paradise mainly due to its diversity in ethnicity, culture and religion. There is no lack of food options here, with a good mix of traditional Malay, Chinese, Indian and Peranakan dishes. Even if we are going to put on weight and eat as much as we could over 3 days, it would still be difficult to come home feeling fully satisfied and having tried them all.

Bringing familiar, nostalgic and comforting flavours of Penang cuisine to Taman Molek since March 2014, you don’t have to travel all the way up north for some great delicious Penang cuisine. Almost everything you know about Penang food can be found right here at The Little Island in a nostalgic environment, with the chefs working hard to ensure that the food is meticulously prepared using traditional cooking methods to preserve the rich Penang food culture and heritage.

The Little Island‘s internal design evokes the old nostalgic Penang with the “kopitiam” ambience, where we could soak up the rustic and nostalgic atmosphere with rattan chairs and matching green-titled table top while gobbling down a bowl that evokes that little child in us. The various turquoise lattice partitions are quite a novel idea in helping to transport us to and fro Penang as we look to savour everything we know about food from the island paradise from their menu.

Penang Prawn Mee

littleisland3

Probably the most well-known delight from under the sea, the Penang Prawn Mee is pretty generous with their serving of spinach, egg, fish cakes and an acceptable amount of bean sprouts and fried shallots. The prawns are sweet, succulent and the soup red, rich and full of umami goodness. Oh, the sambal is equally divine too!

Penang Asam Laksa

littleisland

Suffice to say, the Penang Asam Laksa is one of their signature dish that comes packed with thick rice noodles. The soup base was very flavourful and filled with generous amount of flaked mackerels, while the prawn paste gives more depth to the broth, yet made refreshing with the sliced pineapple, cucumber, onion and mint leaves.

Penang Char Kway Teow

littleisland5

What we appreciated most from their Penang Char Kway Teow is the flavour of ‘wok hei’, and the freshness of the ingredients, which include flat rice noodles which were slightly charred, prawns, egg, lap cheong, bean sprouts and Chinese chives on a banana leaf. While this comfort food dish uses less oil, its perceived unhealthiness is mostly weighed out by how tasty it is, and something we missed sorely from home whenever we are overseas!

Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee

littleisland4

Cooked with fresh prawns, bean sprout, egg and garlic, splashing generous amount of crustacean stock and letting the flavours absorb into the noodles, the Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee was flavourful, with a moderate smoky flavour. A squeeze of lime and some kicking sambal chilli make the dish even better.

Asam Fish Mama Recipe

littleisland6

The Asam Fish Mama Recipe is another dish that boils down to luck, as the stingray only comes in limited quantity and they tend to run out really fast. The fish was very fresh, and the broth had a nice balance of sour such that it was enough to get our salivary glands going but not enough to cause a shudder, and somehow had a really homely feel to it and slurping on the broth just makes one nostalgic.

Penang Poh Pia (2 Pcs)

littleisland7

The Penang Poh Pia or spring rolls are definitely worth experiencing. Made from light, porous crepes which soak up all the yummy sweet and savoury juices from the stir fried turnip, cucumber, carrots, egg and chives, the skin was quite well done and holds everything well together. The shop usually sells out their popiahs, so be sure to head there early to avoid disappointment.

Cendol

littleisland9

In Penang, this mouthwatering Cendol includes red beans, glutinous rice, grass jelly and creamed corn. There is fragrant gula Melaka and fragrant coconut milk, indeed a pleasant respite from the blistering tropical heat.

It is uncommon in Johor to find other states’ food fare along the streets, but with The Little Island conveniently located and easily accessible from many parts of JB, die-hard Penang cuisine fans and natives can now enjoy these classic favourites with a delicious twist. But, if you’re craving Penang food and cannot afford a ticket to the foodie paradise, this is probably the next best thing.
