For a growing capital city still a fraction of the size of Greater Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru downtown packs enough punch, offering an array of entertainment, shopping and dining options up with the country’s best. Taking a walk down the old town “memory lanes” that encompasses Jalan Trus, Jalan Dhoby, Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Jalan Pahang and Jalan Ibrahim is fast becoming a favourite itinerary among the hipster crowd and visitors, and just a day through JB’s street of history is nowhere near enough.
If by dusk, thoughts of the bed are starting to fill your mind, it’s time to slow down and check into The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen – Bed and Breakfast and check out what the first and only boutique accommodation in the heritage quarter of JB has to offer…
From the makers of Faculty of Caffeine comes The Replacement, whose white-washed interior and facade is striking and stands out among the rustic brownish hues that we would not miss out on the road. Kudos to Edward and team for giving JB a nook to celebrate good food (probably the only place in town where you can find Churros and their Egg Benedict done right), and for the wanderlust to rest between wanders. There’s really no question about how more convenient and location-savvy it could possibly be to have a cafe situated just below our sojourn!
After getting ourselves checked in at the ground level, the narrow stairs (on the cafe’s left) lead us to a visual delicacy that draws inspiration of the minimalistic cafe below and adopts an immaculate and somewhat polished feel. The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen – Bed and Breakfast offer various themes to their lodges, so we got to choose from the Skylight, the Loft, the Stories and Platform (which will be available soon). Each room has individual character while all sharing that same cosy feel and we will soon discover.
With a very Kinfolk-inspired outlook, the Skylight is aptly named for the ceiling window that brightens the room with natural sunlight. Snugly suitable for couples, the room also comes with a designer lounge chair, full-length mirrors and two compartment drawers hidden below our tatami-style bed which keeps essential grooming items like a blow-dryer (a must-have in our case). The room is so tastefully decorated and offer a big comfy bed that could swallow us in luxurious quilt and pillows that maybe it’s time for an afternoon nap. Everything else can wait for now…
With the view of the busy Jalan Dhoby street for company, the Loft boasts a room style where the bottom area consists of cosy lounge space with a leather sofa and a coffee table while the top comprises a comfy Queen bed (gasp). Ideal for a quiet workspace with our laptop, this is the perfect room to soak in the entire heritage quarter atmosphere while getting some productive work done. If you have a party of three, the lounge space could fit an extra bed, but that’s the maximum occupancy allowed.
For those who prefer something more communal, the Stories offers of a bunk bed with 2 single beds and a round table and stool for chit-chats or simply marvelling at the bustling streetscape by the window while surfing the Internet (with complimentary Wi-Fi) and checking in to make our friends on Facebook green with envy LOL!
The bathrooms offered in the lodge are communal, something we have come to expect given the space constraint, but they were spotless and hardly get crowded, so all is good.
If 24 hours is all the time you’ve got to take in all the sights and sounds of the old town, do consider a great staycation or weekend getaway at The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen – Bed and Breakfast to help you make the most of every JB minute.
