First encounter with music
For most people, many of their earliest personal memories are of music, as it targets the same, deep-level parts of the brain that are involved in regulating our emotions and where many of our earliest and strongest memories are stored. However, music was never a childhood passion of mine, and it wasn’t until the age of 14 before I realised my love for percussion. Soon I was composing my own tempo and beats, and that life-changing moment of truth took me to pursue my interest at Sangeetha Swara Laya (Johor) with the recognition by Alagappa University (Karaikudi, India), under the tutelage of Dr Hariharan Subramaniam (Tabla) and Sir Ajith Bhaskaran Dass, Suvarna Fine Arts (Sangeetham). The rest was history.
Challenging the stereotypes of traditional music education
There’s no denying that the world runs on implicit bias, and people tend to generally categorise music into stereotypes that gave rise to old-school approach versus the new school of thought. Aarambam Music Academy was started two years ago, with the vision to provide the opportunity for anyone to learn music and dance, and to build a “Fusion Community” through courses in Malay, Chinese and Indian music culture under one roof. In promoting the exchange and learning of music culture within the community, we managed to unite our students as one family.
In this era, we observed that young children were losing interest from the traditional approach, so we set out to improvise the teaching concepts and delivery, without going against the traditions. Here, our students learn to play instruments, sing vocal (practical), while studying Music Theory as a subject based on the history, components and elements of Indian Music Culture. Moreover, we do not punish students for any mistakes, rather we turned their “punishment” into exercise and that actually improve their memory and brain power while instilling musical discipline. Through a “community music” learning approach, we can encourage more personal expression and group interaction. and actually helped students to discover more about themselves, cultivate their interest which has the potential to turn this passion into a profession or career in the music industry.
Community music learning beyond the classroom
Community music offers an open and unique opportunity for people of all backgrounds and abilities to learn and develop together, and open the doors for learning outside of the classroom. As music educators, it is important that we encourage our pupils to take part in community activities outside of school to apply their learning in a different environment and discover other opportunities within their community. One of our recent activity was the “Give A Book & Change A Life Campaign” where used school textbooks were collected from our students and given a new lease of life to benefit underprivileged children, as a blessing and to nurture the value of humanity towards our community.
Never too old to learn or play an instrument
It’s interesting to note that our community music platform has seen many adults, as well as families turning up to learn the traditional instruments such as Sangeetham and Tabla. With patience and regular practice, everybody is teachable and everyone can learn, no matter what age you’re at.
Music truly knows no limit. Through our community music approach, we hope to help especially young children to discover and develop their interest in music while shaping their character and open their mind to the real world outside of their comfort zone. Coupled with the best of traditional music education fundamentals and modern teaching and delivery methods, our vision to a achieve a more harmonious society is not far in the making.
Quick fire questions …
Favourite food in JB?
Indian food of course…
Favourite hangout place in JB?
Senibong Cove. Love the environment and food, and it’s a great place to chill and admire the scenery especially at night.
Favourite musicians or musical works?
Illayaraja Sir and A.R Rahman, they are both very unique individuals and talented composer and musician.
Do you see still see yourself as a musician or more of an entrepreneur now?
I see myself as an entrepreneur with the idea to teach and bring about innovations across different cultures of music, and with a vision to build more Academies across Malaysia.
If you were not a musician, what would you have become?
If I have not started this journey, I would still be a full-time student pursuing my college degree. Nevertheless, I still see myself exploring various ideas in music education but the “fire” in me and passion wouldn’t be the same as it is now.
And finally, what would you change if you could turn back time?
I will definitely bite the bullet and start my own Academy earlier rather than taking 2 years to wait and see, and I have come to a point where “sometimes before you start to walk, you need to learn how to fly first”. In each and every fall, there will be a great lesson learnt. I was very much in my comfort zone in my baby steps and if I had known the positive outcome, I would have definitely taken the risk to self-finance or getting people to invest in Aarambam Music Academy.
