Since 2015, TEDxSungaiSegget has provided a conversation platform that addresses a wide scope of fields and issues that would spark community connections and inspiring ideas that change perspectives. Moving on to the 3rd year, we believed that this platform has helped Johoreans rediscover their identities and can continue to expand and contribute valuable ideas to the Johor Bahru transformation process.
Beginning with Soundwav(r)e of the city – at the heart of everything from birds chirping to the conversations we have with friends, the inaugural theme and team from 2015 attempts to unearth the local voices to enhance the experience of Ideas Worth Spreading and foster connections between speakers, audience and community, by returning to the basics through the purest and most powerful form of communication – soundwave. TEDxSungaiSegget intends to be a source of the wave and community as the recipient to be aware (soundware) and receives it. This endeavour to rediscover our heritage and historical roots also led the team back to the very source where it all began – Sungai Segget. Fast forward to 2017, the C🔴nnection and conversation continue on 7 October 2017 (Saturday) at Amari Johor Bahru which was built next to (you guessed it) Sungai Segget.
As the official media partner for the 3rd TEDxSungaiSegget, we take pride in continuing where we left off from last year’s event to bring you a glimpse of the exciting programme for 2017, and to offer some interesting perspectives, and to hear it up close and personal from one of the main architects behind the “soul of JB”. Known as the man behind Kilang Bateri, a lifestyle mall that occupies a factory building; Johan Arifin Bin Mohd Ropi has been involved in rejuvenation projects such as Johor Bahru Transformation program and Iskandar Malaysia’s urban renewal programs since 2010. Currently the CEO of Institut Integriti Kepimpinan dan Latihan Semangat Dato’ Onn (IKLAS), a training unit that assists the government in scouting world-class Johor talents, let’s hear it from the man who is Foreveready to charge and change JB for the better…

To better understand the big idea and what inspires TEDxSungaiSegget past and present:
The homecoming to Johor Bahru
As a “JB Boy” and an architect by training, I was educated through and through in Johor Bahru and graduated from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Skudai. Having started my architectural practice in Kuala Lumpur and spending another 4 years in Singapore, I was fortunate to be involved in a few notable projects, in particular, the design team that delivered The Palm Jebel Ali in Dubai. It was not until 2009 that I decided to bring home my experience and expertise by joining the local town council (MBJB) and subsequently IRDA to serve the interest of my beloved hometown of JB, and bring back new life and character to the place we affectionately call “home”!
How did Kilang Bateri came about?
In my time with IRDA where I was tasked with the JB Transformation Programme, with notable achievements in the urban rehabilitation of Jalan Dhobi and Sungai Segget, JB city as a whole was still lacking in character and identity compared to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and in particular the lack of appeal to the youths to participate in the rejuvenation of the city.
In the excitement of getting Iskandar Malaysia as the next economic corridor in this region and JB starts to take its place in the tourism industry, we thought that there is not so much flavour of Johor Bahru being offered to the tourists. Even by addressing the gap and even with new attractions such as LEGOLAND® and Johor Premium Outlets which is now part of Johorean, there’s really nothing Johor about it. Inspired by Chatuchak Market in Bangkok, Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne or even Bugis Street in Singapore, we felt that it is timely for us to put something to come and treasure what JB is all about. So rather than we keep exploring the green field area and possibly facing the doughnut effect, why don’t we “recharge” the older part of the city where the souls are. So in a nutshell, Kilang Bateri is the “soul of Johor Bahru”!
The biggest challenge in getting Kilang Bateri up and running?
The biggest challenge to make it materialise within 5 weeks is managing egos (including mine) and respecting others. The 5 of us come from various backgrounds with different expertise but with a common love for Johor Bahru. Time and money factor were the main enemies to our whole idea, but at least we were willing to test the idea (even if it’s only at 30 to 40%) and there’s always room to contribute more ideas after that and make it work.
And for your information, the total time frame we did it, from the day we found the place, it only took us five weeks to make it open – the craziest thing I’ve ever done in my life so far, but that doesn’t mean I will stop here (LOL)!
When we open our doors on 15 August 2015, we already have 50 tenants with us (and still with us for they understood the whole idea) and we managed to get 100% occupancy by the third month of our operations (with 84 on the waiting list). In the 5th month, we were voted #1 place to be visited in Johor Bahru by AirAsia, featured in AirAsia magazine as one of the destinations to visit in Johor and subsequently recognised as the creative hub for JB by the British Council. Right now (August 2017), we are still 90% full (hint hint!)…
Being a small Indie company like us, there’s always a tendency to be bullied but that’s what our society is all about. Our message is clear: you can choose to deal with the giants which you may get bullied, or work with us who like to facilitate your business (but you choose to bully us back) but we are ok as we have something truly unique for Johor Bahru.
Kilang Bateri
How is it like being new “kids” on the block?
Unlike the common malls in Johor who are mostly owned and operated by consortiums or developers, Kilang Bateri is the only one being built by the social media, and the netizens actually dictate what kind of components we should have. As a result, our growth rate is three times faster than the normal malls, that’s why we reached 100% occupancy within 3 months of operation. By listening to the market and offering the various components such as food, arts and sports which bring people together, we have successfully created a social community and economic platform, in particular, for the youths to explore and venture into entrepreneurship, as well as those who believe in volunteerism to make good for the city.
Kilang Bateri
How does it feel rubbing shoulders with the “big boys”?
When we first came into the industry, we were practically a newbie with no track record and the only people who trusted us are our circle of friends whom we have touched for the past 6 years.
Some of the big shots coming with big bucks are also looking for tenants and actually came to see our tenants and offered a lower rate. However, the way we look at it, Kilang Bateri was designed with startups in mind and what we are doing is actually an incubator. If they managed to get into more established malls, we would see it as a graduation and that’s the whole goal. Hopefully, they remember where they came from!
Any final words of advice?
For me, ideas must be tested, be it successful or fail, so I rather die to try than live not trying. It’s ok to have failures in life, but I prefer to think positive and continue to look for opportunities. Thanks to TEDxSungaiSegget, let’s get C🔴nnected and work together!
Quick fire questions …
Favourite food in JB?
It has to be Kacang pool at Cupchai in Kilang Bateri, and you must also try the ABC at the food court. Outside of Kilang Bateri, the mee hoon wrapped in daun pisang at Mawar.
Favourite hangout place in JB (besides Kilang Bateri)?
I like the ambience at Jalan Dhoby and sometimes Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, because it always instilled the JB-ness in me!
Favourite architects or architectural works?
When it comes to minimalist, I adore the works of Glenn Murcutt (Australia), John Pawson (UK) and Ridwan Kamil (current Mayor of Bandung, Indonesia).
Do you see yourself still an architect or more of a businessman now?
My kids are so confused and at one point they asked me “who are you”? Till I die, I am always an architect!
If you were not an architect or doing Kilang Bateri, what would you have become?
Lawyer (laughter all around…)
And finally, what would you change if you could turn back time?
I wish I could still have Pantai Lido. For me, it’s the only Miami in Malaysia and if I could keep Pantai Lido, I can possibly make JB more vibrant with it but it’s time to move on.

The theme for TEDxSungaiSegget 2017 is C🔴nnect, where the curators believe that we’re not divided even the world made us seem so. By paying attention and taking the initiative, we will discover the magical fabric of our community and our society – the connection between each and every one of us.
C🔴nnection happens in many ways, both intentionally and unintentionally, so take this opportunity to spread this idea of C🔴nnectivity in a few areas we too believe that should strengthen to make JB a better place for everyone.
