What is it exactly about Thai food that has captured the minds and souls of people not just here in Johor Bahru, but everywhere? The mix of selected herbs, leaves and seeds, or the exotic blend of sour, savoury, bitter, sweet and hot flavours and aromas that make it tough to walk by without at least taking a taste?
Seeing as to how popular Thailand is as a travel destination for most Malaysians (and Singaporeans), we are pretty sure that there is sufficient demand for excellent Thai food to sustain the ever-growing number of Thai restaurants in JB. If you’ve been over to Taman Sentosa lately, you may have already noticed something is-a-cooking around the corner (literally). Step into this very (Signature) House, and you’ll savour a taste of Thai upscale home cooking while enjoying your meal in a sleek, contemporary restaurant.
Seeking to continually innovate and experiment to bring out ingenuity with authenticity from our usual Thai fare, Signature House has been bringing something refreshing to the table for many foodies and natives of Taman Sentosa since 20 January 2016. Formerly known as
Social House, the present Signature House managed to stand out prominently as a go-to destination for contemporary Thai food by taking residences in a corner semi-detached house along Jalan Sutera amidst the influx of different foodie haunts there.
The casual setting accentuated by the warm lighting and tastefully done decorations with bits and pieces of oriental flavour sets an inviting mood with a cosy dining atmosphere for conversations and great food. The pinewood tables here are large enough for groups or gatherings, and the use of comfy and colourful cushion chairs make dining that much more pleasant and refined than the other casual outlets.
Multi-purpose level (two)
From celebrations at “home”, cocktail parties to corporate dinners, Signature House can cater to the tastes of our discerning guests and surprise them (from as little as 20 to 50 pax) with the unexpected flavours of modern Thai dishes.
Green Milk Tea | Thai Milk Tea | Lemongrass
In true Thai fashion, we decided to kick things off with Green Milk Tea, Thai Milk Tea and Lemongrass, our drinks of choice whenever we dine at a Thai restaurant.
The Thai Milk Tea (Nam Ma Phraw) tasted like a good Thai milk tea we would get along the streets of Bangkok that was smoothly sweet but not overly so. Made from strongly brewed Ceylon Tea mixed with evaporated milk poured over crushed ice, each sip was pleasantly fragrant with a creamy taste and touch of bitterness lingering over sweetness. If Thai Milk Tea is not your cup of tea, the Iced Lemongrass (Nam Tra Khir) is sure to get your tastebuds ready to combat the heat from the impending spices.
Mango Salad (Yum Ma Muang)
To get us prepped for the big meal ahead, we started with a zesty Mango Salad (Yum Ma Muang) that comprises thin strips of under-ripe mango. Tossed in a tangy dressing using ingredients imported from “home”, the appetiser features all of the flavours of Thai cooking – the tart from fresh lime juice, salty from fish sauce, spicy from chillies and sweet from brown sugar, topped with crunchy roasted peanuts for a crackling finish!
泰式小炒 – 芥兰炒烧肉 Stir Fried Kai Lan with Roast Pork (Pad Ka Na Moo Tod) & 罗勒叶皮蛋辣炒猪肉碎 Stir Fried Minced Pork with Basil Leaves and Century Eggs (Ka Pao Moo Sab)
(Stir Fried Minced Pork with Basil Leaves and Century Eggs, Ka Pao Moo Sab)「又是两道米饭杀手！
Giving ourselves a break before the heavier dishes, the Stir Fried Kai Lan with Roast Pork (Pad Ka Na Moo Tod) are cooked nicely, giving our palates a refreshing change while the roast pork adds some body. We also ordered the Stir Fried Minced Pork with Basil Leaves and Century Eggs (Ka Pao Moo Sab) and loved how fragrant the basil leaves compliment the minced meat consistently which struck a delicate balance between the spiciness and the taste of the meat. Having some jasmine rice on hand certainly helps put out the fieriness if you are not too great with spicy food.
Spicy Lemon Soup Squid (Tom Yum Pla Muek)
Another dish from our food bucket list wherever we dine, this Spicy Lemon Soup Squid (Tom Yum Pla Muek) is almost a no-brainer. The squid is soft and tender, slightly spicy with hints of lime from the soup that tasted almost like tom yam. Slurp on it carefully, or you would be bound to get bouts of cough from the chillies hitting your throat. We suggest having another bowl of rice to balance out the spice and saltiness.
Tomyam Soup with Coconut Milk (Tom Yum Num Kan Talay)
How could we omit this oh-so-quintessentially Thai Tomyam Soup with Coconut Milk (Tom Yum Num Kan Talay) and loved by so many that was utterly satisfying and tom-yummilicious with a good amount of seafood inside, but the highlight for us was the broth which managed to impress the sceptics in us. We found it refreshing palatable and easy on the throat, with the gradual build-up of flavour made us want more with every mouthful. This size is suitable for two to finish and might not be enough for three to four because it’s so good you’d just want more bowls of it LOL.
Green Curry Chicken (Gaeng Keaw Wan Gai)
A staple on any Thai menu, the Green Curry (Gaeng Keaw Wan Gai) was less punchy and robust unlike what we’ve previously had in Thailand, though the chicken pieces that were prevalent throughout the curry were tender and incredibly flavourful. Although the curry was delicious, it wasn’t too creamy or overwhelming and had a nice mouthfeel, something that we’d love to have with just a side of steamed rice anytime for lunch or dinner.
Three Flavoured Fish (Plan Sram Rod, Lemon | Lemongrass | Cashew Nuts)
To jazz up our meal with something a little more lavish, we ordered the Three Flavoured Fish (Plan Sram Rod) served atop a metal fish-shaped dish. Crispy, flavourful and with a good contrast between the crispy skin and silky flesh, it’s not like typical whole fried fish where the entire dish including the meat has been fried to a dry crisp. We were pleasantly surprised that the sauce wasn’t cloyingly sweet, but provided a refreshing citrus flavour to the dish. Even at the market price, we felt that it was worth every cent!
Deep Fried Pork Knuckle (Ka Moo Tod)
Don’t let the bland appearance of the Deep Fried Pork Knuckle (Ka Moo Tod) puts you off. Beyond its pinkish exterior and tender flesh, we relish the crackling sounds of the crispy, golden brown skin of the pork knuckles, which was light and not cloying even after many mouthfuls, while the meat also peels off the bone so easily and provides a melt-in-our-mouth sensation. Chilli addicts like us will also like the fact that the dish comes with three different dipping sauces that are sweet, sour and spicy.
BBQ Pork Neck (Moo Yang)
BBQ Pork is another dish commonly found on the streets of Thailand, but the chef uses the neck of the pig which is prized for its flavour and tenderness. Cooked on a charcoal grill, the BBQ Pork Neck (Moo Yang) had a subtle smoky aroma with tender and juicy meat. Have it together with the soy based chilli and fish dipping sauce to give each bite an added oomph!
Pandan Chicken (Gai Hor Bai Toey)
The homemade Pandan Chicken (Gai Hor Bai Toey) was another winner that were all lovingly hand-wrapped by the chefs. The chicken is best enjoyed while it’s hot or warm and were flavourful and especially aromatic due to the pandan. It is a dish that holds the potential to be a crowd pleaser, and we did not hesitate to order a second serving.
Mango Sticky Rice
By now, all of us at the table were stuffed to the point where we dreaded having to put another morsel of food into our mouths. But when dessert was finally served, all that fear vanished. There will always be room for desserts, and the Mango Sticky Rice did not disappoint. The mango was gorgeously yellow, ripe and refreshing, while the rice was sweeter which nicely balances out the sweetness of this entire dessert. It was a pity that the Thai red ruby dessert was out of stock but we would eat this mango dish again. Better luck, next time!
We thoroughly enjoyed our homely Thai experience at Signature House, where the pricing is pretty affordable for the quality and fairly reasonable portions of the dishes served here so that we won’t be going home with an empty wallet. As part of their ongoing promotion, Signature House has a value-for-money Lunch Set (Mondays to Fridays, 12pm to 3.30pm) that is going for only RM8.90 which includes an appetiser, main dish and dessert.
