Voted the cleanest city in the Asean region in 2018, with plenty of heritage architecture and an infectiously languorous mood, the royal town of Muar (once known as Bandar Maharani) makes for an intriguing and rewarding weekend getaway and is well worth spending a day or two exploring, even if you have less than 48 hours …
Muo Boutique Hotels
Being arty farty ourselves, our choice of accommodation certainly reflect on our taste and there’s no better choice than this tastefully decorative lodge converted from an almost rundown space to a boutique hotel overlooking the Muar River. Apart from their clean, compact but cosy rooms, what’s there not to like when we could take a walk down memory lane at their lobby, filled with classic television sets, transistor radios and video cassettes along with bric-a-brac from a bygone era? After checking in, it’s time to head out for some cafe-hopping and find-dining in Muar!
Day 1 12pm – Cafe 1988
A family-own florist café which is highly instagrammable, Cafe 1988 resembles the cozy corner of an inviting home, with a menu comparable to those in found in Johor Bahru. And guess what, the resident barista is actually an uncle who used to be a motorcycle mechanic, but make no mistake, his coffee art is really detailed and nothing short of ordinary.

Muar Glutton Street
Flooded with plentiful of food stalls along Jalan Haji Abu, Muar Glutton Street is a place selling familiar local hawker fare that we foodies cannot miss out. There are no special stalls here, just food stalls on both side of the street, selling from day to night. Interesting.
Restoran Siang Lin
We couldn’t possibly miss this Malay stew dish, and Restoran Siang Lin serves one of the best Asam Pedas in town. Cooked in tamarind fruit juice with chilli and vegetables such as eggplants, tomatoes and okras, the Asam Pedas is balanced savoury and spicy with a slight sourish flavour.

Look out for the huge elephant on the wall out front on a yellow background and we soon found this busy 434 Kopi which has been running since 1953. Served in dainty cups, we had our fill of the delicious coffee brewed from Malaysia Liberica Elephant beans, while also helped ourselves to even more otak, nasi lemak and ayam goreng.

Mural art trail
Art enthusiasts like us also flock to the city for a glimpse of the murals done by flourishing local & foreign artists alike. These mural arts include Bangsa Johor, Ferry Pier, The Roots of World Furniture and The Loving Sisters. The portrait of 7-year-old Nur Najwa Alisyah Abdul Rashid and her 3-year-old sister Nur Najiyah Armani, prominently displayed on the side of a 4-storey building, is our answer to the kids on a bicycle street art in Penang. Created by Russian artist Julia Volchkova over 12 days, this terrific black and white 12m-high painting also paints its way into Malaysia Book of Records as the “Largest Portrait Mural” in the country. WOW!
