2016年,杂志大人们在新山有幸结识了许多有「食」力、有「尝」识、有「闻」化的各路江湖豪杰,长知识之余又觉不该独享所见所闻所尝,因此便将每回的寻美食或觅食材之旅转化成双语文字与图像,一一分享在自家网站上。由一开始的数十人,渐渐成长为万人详阅的篇章,大人们一路走来,真心感激各界默默支持 (旋转撒花)!

2016 was a year of disruption, albeit a gratifying one in every sense of the word. Having come up close and personal with a diverse group of mostly homegrown award-winning chefs, restaurateurs and café owners, with many upping the ante with new menus or revamped spaces, we felt the time is now right to pay tribute to these food heroes who have been quietly going about their business. After all, we couldn’t have done it ourselves, having benefitted from all the kind support as we grow our readership the slow and steady way.

All it took was a brilliant “service” (aka bright idea) during one of our regular badminton sessions after work to put paid to our grand plans to stay in shape for 2017, and a new <MENU> was born. 至于为何将书名中译为《识食物者为俊杰》?因为本书内容并非只为单纯尝鲜,这一回咱们也将有关于食物知识的篇章纳入其中,而为这些知识作深入解说的美食份子,近乎百分百生长於或成长於新山;另,《MENU – Find-dining in Johor Bahru 识食物者为俊杰》也为看官们推荐了一系列出产在地食材的好去处,集休闲、尝鲜、健身为一体,谁还能说新山这城市太沉闷呢?

Find-dining” in Malaysia’s southernmost city is no easy task, even with two of our best partners in culinary crime – Tony (Johor Kaki) and Peggy Loh (My Johor Stories) showing the way. Continuing our collective mission and passion for digging deep into JB’s food scene, beyond the legions of street hawkers and local eateries, we took it upon ourselves to search for our next great gastronomic adventure without having to jet set around the world to taste different cuisines.

80天的制作期,从确认方向、访谈、尝味、撰稿、摄影、翻译、排版、设计、校对、结集成书、印刷再上载自家网站等,期间还得照常处理日常公务,狭缝中把时间排满,团队们的精神始终处于高压状态,而那环游了美食世界80天的味蕾,应当是全身上下最幸福的部位吧!

Countless nights (and suppers) then followed the initial ideation, leading to more food photography, reviews and interviews, and finally countless page design, layout, editorial and translation. From concept through to print, the journey throughout JB took us around the (gourmet) world in exactly… 80 days!
