Bach For More – The 2nd JB Classical Music Festival Returns!

Can you remember the first times you heard classical music? Was it when your parents were playing their cds, records or tapes, or maybe while staying in front of the TV and watching cartoons and commercials? Ask anyone what they think of classical music, most people would think of performers in tuxedos in a concert hall performing “boring” music of musicians who have passed on, while others would think ‘stuffy’ – something they can’t relate to. But music is far greater than being confined to an exotic black box for a night out once a month or twice a year. In my case, I think of music that’s been written in the last 500 years, the resulting “generation gap” putting paid to my ambition to perform on stage. We might all have different shades of skin on the outside, but on the inside we all have music flowing in our veins nevertheless, right?

Fast forward two decades on, I finally answered the call to come home, having spent a good part of early career globetrotting, including a 3-year spell which took me across nearly half of Europe, soaking in the ambience at the hometown of Mozart, or attending concerts in London and Madrid. Coming home to a “cultural desert” was never easy, as I ponder a life with hardly any arts, culture and entertainment. I couldn’t be more wrong! Having being confronted by a sea of yellow buntings and banners whenever I hit town back in September 2012, and a chanced encounter with Suzie (and friends of JB Arts Festival) a year later, a new reality soon drawn upon me. Life in JB will never be the same again.

A festival for the people of Johor Bahru!

JBIFC_JSPA

JBIFC_JBAF

The Johor Society for the Performing Arts (JSPA) was founded in 2000 as a non-commercial organisation, dedicated to providing the missing-link that Johor Bahru needed: arts, culture, and entertainment. Meetings between friends became concerts for enthusiasts. Concerts for enthusiasts became events for everybody. And before we knew it, the inaugural Johor Bahru Arts Festival was born in 2004. Since then, Johor Bahru has transformed, and the festival has transformed with it, having evolved over the years to become the city’s biggest annual event, and now the longest-running arts festival in the country.

2015 marked the year where JSPA’s most ambitious project yet – Johor Bahru: International Festival City (JB: IFC) was conceived. Could you have imagined JB welcoming a living legend such as Sadao Watanabe, or playing host for a gathering of award-winning directors and stars from eleven countries to celebrate film? How about the possibility of us being blown away by the National Symphony Orchestra in full force?

Imagine no more, for JB is now getting ready for a jam-packed programme, with performances by Malaysia’s best musical talents led by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), along with international renowned UK-based Malaysian Harpsichordist Dato’ Dr. Ng Kah-Ming and distinguished performers from France, Spain and Austria, happening next week from 15-19 June. As you can see, JB: IFC is not just about bringing the world to Johor Bahru – it is also about bringing Johor Bahru to the world. The city is participating – how about you?

JBCMF 2016: a multi-sensory experience!

RF Princess Cove

JBCMF2016_DatukDrNgKahMing

Brought to you by R&F Princess Cove, home to prime waterfront living overlooking the Straits of Johor, and the opening performance for the 2nd Johor Bahru Classical Music Festival (JBCMF 2016), the Hong Kong Exchange listed China based property developer is setting a new lifestyle benchmark, both within the company as well as its community outreach through this project. This unique collaboration will also witness JB’s first ever fine dining garden concert at R&F Princess Cove, featuring a gala blue carpet ceremony, graced by our beloved DYMM Raja Zarith Sofiah (Permaisuri Johor) and YAM Tunku Tun Aminah (Puteri Johor), and opening performance by Dato Dr. Ng Kah Ming (Harpsichord) with Isobel Collyer (Singer / Reader / Actress) and Layil Barr (Recorder & Viol) from Charivari Agréable on 15 June (Wednesday). What a rare sighting of a REAL harpsichord and viol up close and personal, as we embark on this time-traveling experience from the 17th to the 20th century, beginning with a musical narrative journey commemorating the 400th anniversary of the death William Shakespeare.

JBCMF2016_EnsembleVirama2

The people of Johor Bahru deserve to have their talents showcased on the best possible platform, and meet the best in the arts and cultural scene, so be sure to catch the performances of our very own young homegrown talents from Ensemble Virama, as well as experience 14 harps on stage at once with the Malaysian Harp Ensemble. Don’t miss the Johor Regional Round of the Euroasia Strings Competition 2016 taking place at The Black Box @ MAP, Mall of Medini as we unearth Malaysia’s next big talent, all happening next Saturday (18 June). How’s that for showing our support to these talented youths, and to inspire our own young ones for a change?

While I’m no accomplished musician, nor can I tell Mozart and Beethoven apart, I can safely say one thing for sure – classical music isn’t as ‘atas’ as we might think, but actually has followed us our entire lives! Don’t take my word, join JBCMF 2016 to rediscover classical music from a different angle through interactive performances and workshops. Hopefully with your participation, the day will come when the people of Johor Bahru should be able to tell everybody that their city is no longer a ‘cultural desert’ but is now an oasis of the arts. The people of Johor Bahru deserve to live in one of the most bustling and happening cities in the region, so everyone’s invited.

Thanks Suzie, and everyone involved at JB:IFC.

It regularly presents specially commissioned new music and successfully collaborates with local and international artists. The Sutera Ensemble
Loo Bang Hean (Piano), Angel Lee (Violin), Dr. Andrew Filmer (Viola) & Jonathan Oh (Cello)

The musicians that comprise Sutera are seasoned educators of all levels. Their collective training has spanned the globe, under major pedagogues and institutions in England, France, Italy, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, and they have used this experience teaching at the music departments of UCSI, UPM, UM and UiTM. Violinist Angel Lee and cellist Jonathan Oh have brought up young talents to emerge as the prize-winning Arioso Sinfonia and Seremban Quartet, with their now teenage students holding professional diplomas. Loo Bang Hean is one of Malaysia’ s best-known pianists, having played as a soloist across the country and as a frequent guest at the MPO’ s chamber music series. In addition to playing the viola, Andrew Filmer’ s prize-winning public speaking abilities have been utilized in concerts of the Sinfonietta in Penang, the Virama Ensemble in Kuala Lumpur, and as narrator for the Selangor Symphony.

The Sutera Ensemble doesn’ t just perform music they think is meaningful. As educators and communicators, the performers use commentaries to uncover the architecture and inspiration that have allowed classical music to live on centuries later. Through this approach we see how Mozart’ s music has drama and humour, not only through how he wrote it, but how else he might have written it. We see how the German composer Brahms takes on inspiration from Turkey, becoming truly musically meaningful for all cultures as it makes its musical journey, generations later, to Malaysia. From a duo to trios and finally to quartets, the ensemble also illustrates through words and melodies the varied intricacies of chamber – or the Italian “camera”– music. Together, they aim not only to serve existing audiences, but also to develop new audiences through a dedication to education, and to show why they enjoy the company of their musical partners. Through the friendship of these musical snapshots, we see how the magic of chamber music is available to all listeners, with no barrier of age, or culture.

Duo Aliada: Michal Knot & Bogdan Laketic (Austria)
(Sponsored by the Austrian Embassy Kuala Lumpur)

Duo Aliada is based in Vienna and features saxophonist Michał Knot and accordionist Bogdan Laketic. Duo Aliada employs a completely new approach to classical music, breathing fresh life into compositions heard time and time again. Saxophone and accordion are two of the youngest and perhaps most underappreciated acoustic instruments, which are most commonly associated with jazz and folk music, respectively. In Duo Aliada, the two join together in a risky, but exciting project. With its impressive approach to famous classical repertoire, Duo Aliada proves the great potential that lies in the combination of these two neglected instruments. Duo Aliada’ s name emphasizes the “allied sound” of the saxophone and accordion, two instruments based on the same principle of sound production: air. The wide range of acoustic and technical possibilities of this alliance enables a sublime and united ensemble sound.

With a dedicated interest in developing new audiences, educational workshops are presented to students of all ages, focusing on the musical experience without sacrificing artistic integrity. In 2015, the ensemble presented its debut concert calendar to high acclaim, performing at the Malaysian Youth Music Festival and Deciso, guest lecturing at the UCSI University, as well as presenting an education program at the Alice Smith International School. Since then, the ensemble has collaborated with soloists Ang Mei Foong, Loo Bang Hean, and guest leader Andrew Filmer.

“Vienna, Vienna, Vienna” is Ensemble Virama’s third production, which will explore the rapid evolution of Viennese music at the turn of the 20th century. This wonderful program is held by another common theme, love: there is the love of friendship in Strauss, the lost of love in Mahler, and the forgiveness of love in Schoenberg. The music is indulgent, decadent, fun, shocking, and truly memorable. Distinguished Malaysian soprano, Tan Sin Sim (adjunct faculty member, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Singapore), will sing the solo part of Mahler’s heartbreaking Songs of a Wayfarer.
