Turning into Jalan Trus today is both routine but yet exciting at the same time, as we stopped short of driving past the usual landmarks such as Persada Johor International Convention Centre, Johor Old Chinese Temple or the JB heritage district. Instead, a new oasis of comfort and service, with fresh and modern facilities, just a couple of steps from Komtar JBCC and Johor Bahru City Square, is now bearing witness to the fast-completed Sungai Segget revitalisation works, and the progressive city transformation that best depicts the Johor Bahru’s past and present along Jalan Trus and Jalan Wong Ah Fook.

Sawadee krap, welcome to Amari Johor Bahru!

Incorporating contemporary Malaysian and Thai touches into the interiors at the first Amari Hotel in Malaysia, Amari Johor Bahru bears the hallmarks of exclusivity, distinctive quality and personal touch of the award-winning Singapore-based FBEYE International‘s founder Warren Foster-Brown. Coupled with the warm reception, refreshing cold towels plus signature welcome drink – Pandan Lemongrass upon arrival at the check-in desk on Level 6, the overall process was smooth as silk such that we could slip into holiday mode straight away!

Originally from Thailand and expanding across Asia, the market-leading Amari brand of hotels and resorts is part of the ONYX Hospitality Group, which has a rich and long-standing heritage of over 52 years and prides itself as one of Asia-Pacific’s leading hospitality management companies with a portfolio that includes over 44 operational properties across Asia. Celebrating the colours and rhythms of modern Asia, each hotel highlights the textures and flavours of its unique setting through architecture, design, cuisine and service, as evident from their luxury Saffron portfolio, Shama serviced apartments, The Mosaic Collection of hotels and resorts and the all-new select service OZO, with more new properties rapidly being developed in the next few years.

Being the 17th and latest addition to the Amari brand of hotels and resorts worldwide, Amari Johor Bahru reflects the warmth and energy of an evolving modern Asia. Soaring above the bustling commercial district and conveniently located between Jalan Trus and Jalan Wong Ah Fook, the hotel is a 30-minute drive from Senai International Airport, 60-minute drive from Singapore’s Changi International Airport; while the JB Sentral CIQ complex and the upcoming Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, which will link Johor Bahru and Singapore, is just 5 to 10 minutes away on foot. Bustling night bazaars, booming cultural hubs and chic cafes await as we took a leisurely stroll further down along Jalan Trus towards the old town districts.

Deluxe King and Twin rooms

Offering a dynamic city view and furnished in soothing beige hues and purple accents, our Deluxe King and Twin rooms feature subtle references to the locality with a signature bed head depicting fresh winds blowing into the surrounding mountainscapes and custom carpets inspired by the undulating terrain of the nearby hills. The clean and contemporary lines are balanced with traditional Thai motifs which are hand-carved on the drawer panels and reinterpreted on cushions, fabrics and bathroom glass panels.

However, the devil is really in the personal detail, as we couldn’t help but fall in love with their delightful dual-frontage wardrobes, with the safe, shelving, drawers and hanging space all nicely fitted with generous storage for our shopping finds!

And their attention to details doesn’t stop there, as the “Dual Key” family suites (room numbers ending with 20 & 25) are actually an interesting combination made up of the Junior Suite and a Grand Deluxe room, giving those travelling in a bigger group with spectacular views from the private balcony overlooking Jalan Wong Ah Fook, while retaining ample privacy with an at-home feel for us and our family.

All guest rooms are appointed with highlights such as spa-inspired bathrooms, ergonomic workstations. minibar with coffee/tea making facilities, 40″ interactive LED TV, USB connection and international power panels, ample space to work, free WiFi and modern technology all put together to ensure we have a restful stay.

Library, Social Space & Idea Room

To us, the lobby serves as a social hub where we can access other hotel features including Amaya Food Gallery, Amaya Café, Breeze Spa, the Ballroom and meeting venues on the same floor. The Library, Social Space and Idea Room, in particular, impressed us with its generous 3-in-1 lounge area and thoughtfully designed space for meetings, relaxation, working or simply mingling that facilitates shared experiences, unlike most typical hotel business centres we had came across.

Lido & Rex Room

Together with its convenient city-centre location, Amari Johor Bahru lends a prestigious context to all types of meetings, events and conferences. Whether it’s an intimate occasion or a grand affair, the highly versatile Ballroom can be divided into two function rooms (Lido and Rex) with a pre-function foyer, all equipped with the latest audio-visual technology, video conferencing capability and high–speed internet access. The Ballroom is also ideal for dinner functions for up to 300 persons, while the Lido and Rex Rooms can each accommodate dinner events for up to 140 persons. Even a fairy-tale wedding can come true, with venue options to include the outdoor Terrace for cocktail receptions for up to 600 persons or sit down dinners for up to 200 persons. For a more lavish affair, the Ballroom is perfect for 400 persons cocktail style or a formal sit down dinner for 300 persons. Either way, our events will be in the right hands of a professional culinary and events planning team, or the equally dedicated weddings team with expertise in arranging traditional Malay, Chinese, Western and Indian weddings to suit varying requirements.

FIT Centre & Outdoor Swimming Pools

Given our frequent visits to Amaya Food Gallery, we wasted no time to keep in shape at the fully-equipped FIT Centre on Level 8 overlooking the swimming pool. The idea to unwind in the sun or cool off in the outdoor swimming pool while watching the little ones have fun in the children’s pool also appeals, as we look forward to checking into one of the six unique Deluxe Pool Access King & Twin rooms with private terraces, a first of any downtown Johor Bahru hotel, for our next staycation. Before we forget, there’s still the Breeze Spa, where a diverse array of treatments are on offer to help us simply relax and bring balance back to body and soul. We can’t wait to try the Mango Sticky Rice Body Scrub to experience how this popular Thai dessert can works wonders for our skin!

Stepping into Breeze Spa can be a truly “transformational” experience, where we get to be pampered from top to toe, with a diverse array of treatments on offer to help us simply relax and bring balance back to body and soul. Featuring three vibrant single rooms, a double room with a Jacuzzi for couples, a dedicated manicure and pedicure area, we can’t wait to try their signature Mood Massages (choose from Dreamy, Serene, Rejuvenated, Invigorated or Energised) and Mango Sticky Rice Body Scrub to experience how this lip-smacking Thai dessert can works wonders for our skin! Open daily from 10am to 10pm, advanced reservation is highly recommended by calling +607- 266 8888.

Amaya Food Gallery

The Amaya Food Gallery is located at the lobby level and is open all day for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the setting incorporates influences from the architecture and food market culture of different Asian countries. As a whole, the concept resonates the true heart of the Amari experience with its textures, “Colours & Rhythm“, while the menu features bites and yums from the streets of Bangkok and a variety of well-loved dishes from Chinese, Indian, Malay and international cuisines.

With some of the walls decorated with wood panels styled after the tall rectangular grid pattern of traditional “fa pakon” wall modules, we also couldn’t help but marvel at the specially commissioned panels and screens, while counting the iconic Thai elephants synonymous with Thai culture LOL!

We also thoroughly enjoyed watching the chefs at work in the various open kitchens and experience the vibrant flavours of Asian and international cuisine inspired by the rich street food culture of the region. Starting off with a delectable breakfast, followed by all-day delights and an energetic Asian food market-style dinner when night falls, we practically spent about 50% of our staycation, here!

Breakfast @ Amaya Food Gallery

Having eaten our fair share of hotel breakfasts and knowing that it can be challenging to choose wholesome food that will leave us feeling full and energised to start our day of exploring the local area, the (temporary) menu at Amaya Food Gallery still promise to be a scrumptious affair, and it’s hard to resist being lured in by this small but growing options, especially the waffles and pancakes.

For some of the top things to do and places to go in town, be sure to check out:

Lunch @ Amaya Food Gallery

The ala carte menu offered a wide selection with a focus on healthy Thai cuisine based both on the top methods and approaches. Helmed by Chef Ball from Isan (northeastern region of Thailand), we have no doubt the Som Tam, Gai Yang Jim Jaew, Tom Yum Goong, Larb Gai and Pad Thai Goong curated out of his mum’s unique recipes will satisfy even an expert on Asian cuisine or someone who will be tasting authentic Thai food for the first time!

Dinner @ Amaya Food Gallery

Having taken our palates on a gastronomic adventure around Thailand and Southeast Asia, the time has come for us to savour some “home-cooked” food, where each dish is cooked to order using fresh and authentic ingredients and methods. From Chicken Tikka, Kari Ayam Nyonya, Kaidai Jhinga, Asam Pedas Ikan, Wok-fried Beef Ginger to Szechuan PrawnsAmaya Food Gallery‘s menu reflects the full spectrum of the Malaysian cuisine that will set all senses alight with flavours that any palate will relish, remember, and long for afterwards!

Amaya Café

Designed to complement the city’s evolving cafe scene and operating from 6.30am to 6.30pm, Amaya Café offered a soothing and relaxing atmosphere overlooking the lobby, where we could sit back and unwind while enjoying a wide selection of premium teas from TWG, beverages, cakes and pastries.

English Afternoon Tea Set & Local High Tea Set

We were treated to yet another timeless British tradition in a chic urban setting, served on a classic three-layered tier that includes an assortment of freshly baked scones, homemade sandwiches, cakes and pastries, and bottomless refill of our favourite tea from TWG. Even at a mouthwatering price of RM68 nett for 2 pax, our party of four could still share this, seriously!

Khorb Khun Mark Na Krup, our sincere appreciation to the hotel management for giving us a taste of true Thai hospitality, and Malaysia’s first Amari property right in the heart of our thriving home city of JB! We have no doubt our brief staycation at Amari Johor Bahru merely serves as the first chapter of the many Amari guest experiences that will be slowly unfolding in time to come.
