在那新山人尽皆知的直律街，数座饶富历史韵味与色彩的庙宇间，这家为战前建筑披上黑色外衣、白色字体的独立咖啡馆 Faculty of Caffeine (以下简称FOC) 显得既低调又抢眼。
Taking a walk down Jalan Trus has seen several pre-war shophouses been given new life by cafe owners, and the Faculty of Caffeine is probably one of the pioneers leading the third wave cafe-volution in early 2014. Affectionately known as FOC to its legion of fans, the reason behind this quirky name might be the very fact that it was founded by a medical student (then) and an interior designer who are both deeply passionate about coffee, food and design.
Unlike the somewhat larger sitting capacity and white washed walls of The Replacement, FOC features a classic matte black exterior, a stark contrast from the pastel-painted shop lots on the same row, so it’s hard to miss!
The charming decor is an artful blend of the old and new, with this small joint displaying a fantastic lively atmosphere and arts that are made not only for art-savvy peeps but food lovers as well.
Iced Latte & Hot Chocolate
友人说今日的额度还没使用上呢，先点杯 Iced Latte (RM10) 醒醒神，「白褐渲染中，可尝到微酸顺滑。」而热巧克力向来是大人在天气微寒时的不二之选，盛夏时难得遇见一回阴霾，「天冷你就回来，别在风中徘徊。」铁了心要来杯心爱的 Hot Chocolate (RM10) ，「浓郁地像液状巧克力，这滋味你晓得。」二八法则的苦甜比例，尝起来格外讨喜。
With our daily dose of caffeine quota still to be utilised, the subtle bitter notes of our Iced Latte fuses so beautifully with the espresso and milk to form a well-rounded morning pick-me-up or midday treat to keep the caffeine-addict in us belly-happy, while few things are more comforting than a steaming cup of Hot Chocolate. This velvety pure melted chocolate was practically a medicinal brew for our soul that warms us to our toes especially in one of these gloomy rainy days,
经典大早餐 The Breakfast
初时的起家之作，到了今日绝对仍旧值得期待。经典大早餐 (The Breakfast, RM22.90) 里没有配角，只因彼此都太出色。当然堆叠中的松饼还是必须当先锋伺候舌尖，「这儿的松饼特别香脆，与摄氏63度真空低温烹制的水波蛋与牛肉培根 (亦可选择鸡肉火腿)，软硬兼施嗨翻唇齿间。若要增加滋味层次，不妨蘸点随行的芥茉籽奶油。」；辣香茄汁豆送入口中后好浓郁，颠覆了日常的酸甜；极香的炒菌菇搭配炸薯饼，啊大人我好满足。
The demand for well-prepared Western style breakfasts in JB from the well-travelled cosmopolitan set who had studied, worked or lived in the West, and FOC‘s answer to that was to improve on their previous offering with The Breakfast now pair with their signature fluffy and crispy waffle. Accompanied by everyday breakfast food items such as baked beans, sautéed mushrooms and a hash brown with a choice of chicken ham or beef bacon, the highlight was the 63°C sous vide egg which was cooked to perfection. Served with some delicious mustard seed butter which was out of this world, we wonder if we could ever go back to having regular butter hmmm…

招牌熏鸭肉意大利面 FOC Signature Aglio Olio
这一道招牌熏鸭肉意大利面 (FOC Signature Aglio Olio, RM18.90) 果真不负盛名，好吃至极！与一般咱们所尝的 Aglio Olio 不同的是这儿的版本蒜米味少了，却多了各式香料造就其多层次口感。「大人钟爱的 Aglio Olio，油香必须大方包覆每一根面条才合胃。主人家还惊喜巧添了果仁碎与辣椒片，搭上咸香熏鸭肉 (亦可选择牛肉培根)与摄氏63度真空低温烹制的水波蛋，这滋味太完美。」毫无疑问，完食。更正，是极速完食。
Continuing our journey to the “west”, we also had the FOC Signature Aglio Olio with smoked duck, with the added ingredients of fresh parsley, mixed nuts, button mushroom and the same 63°C sous vide egg to give it a unique flavour profile that will satisfy any pasta lovers out there. The golden yellow yolk flows out nicely to the noodles the moment we poked the egg, and we just couldn’t stop having it as we mixed everything and grab a bite!

日式鳗鱼天丼 Signature Tendon
谁说馆中料理份量不足以果腹？瞧瞧这日式鳗鱼天丼 (Signature Tendon, RM28.90)，藏不住的澎湃，视觉早已先饱足。「鳗鱼酱均匀沾附在饱满浑圆的珍珠米粒与鱼身上，再怀着不舍的心情戳破那鲜黄蛋液，缓缓流出并食好对味。随附的酥炸食蔬天妇罗旨在为软糯添加些许坚强口感，默默在为上班族加油打气吗？」
It came as a surprise for us that FOC now offers more than just decent caffeine, and their Signature Tendon (Unagi tempura don) did not disappoint. The ingredients were well put together thoughtfully, as the Unagi slices were char grilled to perfection and enhanced by the marinade it was doused in. We could still feel the two contrasting textures of the smooth, tender white flesh and the crispy grilled skin in our mouth with sufficient notes of saltiness and sweetness. The thick strips of vegetables were fried to a perfect crisp with the same 63°C sous vide egg (again) coated each grain with a silky smoothness. Oishii ne!

韩式炸鸡 Korean Fried Chicken
漫天飘洒下的芝士屑与葱花，让这咸香皮脆的韩式炸鸡 (Korean Fried Chicken, RM19.90) 乍看之下多了一丝唯美气息，大人想说，食力也绝不容忽视啊。「蘸上独家特调酱汁，大人我上瘾了。」这一道，秒杀。是传闻中不想停止的秒速。
Pardon our exaggeration, but we think there is very little in life that a hot plate of fried chicken cannot cure. Admittedly, fried chicken is one of the best soul foods on the planet and being in JB, and we are lucky enough to experience the best of both worlds resulting in even more types of fried chicken (read: Korean Fried Chicken). The “KFC” here has paper thin, crisp skin, and was given a unique touch by lacing it with parmesan shavings and served with a side of spicy Korean chilli sauce for a satisfying crunch and full flavour, every dip!

提拉米苏松饼 The Tiramisu Waffle
将提拉米苏里的元素分离？提拉米苏松饼 (The Tiramisu Waffle, RM19.90) 盘中摆着凝脂乳酪、手指饼、巧克力慕斯块、松饼、雪糕等，再浇上espresso，「好浓郁！微苦的巧克力慕斯块极得人心。」不得不提这儿的松饼香脆度，在一片软嫩甜点中好拔尖。
Created for serious chocolate lovers looking to satisfy their sweet tooth, think rich bitter espresso, vanilla ice cream, chocolate brownie, mascarpone and usual finger biscuit put together with the waffle made for a unique and enjoyable take on The Tiramisu Waffle. Do take care not to pour all the espresso too quick as it may result in an overly bitter taste, though we love it ourselves that way LOL!
