双11光棍节其实是90年代中国大学生所发起的，相当于西方的情人节。这一天，单身的年轻人会请客吃饭或赠送礼物，追求意中人及结束自己的单身状态。这看似单纯的送礼之风竟然被阿里巴巴集团看到商机，把这一天转变为一个风靡网购界的购物热潮！双11作为一个被造出来的节日，仅仅用了8年时间，从最初的淘宝商城促销日，尔后更成为了中国特色甚至是全球的电商狂欢节啊！
从5000万到突破1000亿人民币背后的故事，原来最初的想法就是让消费者每年好好玩一次；毕竟光棍节（11月11日）没事干，那天就买点啥东西去当礼物送人。恰逢中国南边进入深秋，北方进入冬季，人们需要采办的东西格外多；同时11月份没有多大的节日，又夹在10月份黄金周及12月份圣诞节这两个比较大的消费节庆类的时点，这一试水，竟挖出了强大的内需。
Known in China as “bare sticks holiday” because of how it looks numerically, “double eleven” has become synonymous with a unique festival during recent years. What started as an obscure anti-Valentine’s celebration for single people in China back in the 1990s has spawned into the world’s biggest online shopping day which takes place on November 11 every year, when everyone, regardless of their single status buys themselves gifts.
Having spotted the commercial opportunity in Singles Day back in 2009, e-commerce giant Alibaba began launching “Double 11” deals for the very first time, just as online shopping was starting to explode and took the online shopping world by storm. Only last year, more than $12bn was spent on Taobao.com (shopping website by Alibaba) in the first 12 hours of Singles Day, and it surpassed $7bn in the early two hours alone, and that’s just one website! Also seen as a golden opportunity to boost sales in the lull between China’s Golden Week national holiday in October and the Christmas season, Alibaba now refers to Singles Day as the 11.11 Global Shopping Festival.
