Humans feel the need of owning big amounts of stuff, but humans also need to feel free.

Looking around our home and office space, there’s always that pile of old magazines and books that we’ll never read, a kitchen pantry drawer stuffed full of things and that pair of sports sneakers that seemed like a good idea at the time. While searching for inspiration and knowledge related to decluttering, we were motivated by the Danshari method by self-help Japanese author Hideko Yamashita. To our surprise, taking away what has been accumulating for a lot of time is amazing. In fact, finding balance and just keeping what is important is key to us living a happier and meaningful life.

The idea of living with less clutter is appealing to many, but how do we even begin? For a start, anything that doesn’t make us happy or isn’t absolutely necessary would be touched, thanked and sent on its way or donated to charity so that some of these (pre-loved) items can enjoy a second lease of life! Need some ideas? here goes…

It’s never easy to make a dramatic lifestyle change, let alone explain our choice to those around us. However, with a little tact, grace and charm, we can help others understand the joys we find in a minimalist lifestyle, and perhaps even inspire some of them to join us on this journey!

Happy “danshari”, everyone!
