Even though the local F&B scene has come on leaps and bounds since the couple first settled here two years ago, Holly Withers from Stamford, a pretty Lincolnshire town in England, was still missing the traditional British flavours from home. Wei Shen, the guy in her life, has been looking to open a photography studio for a few years. It wasn’t until Holly noticed the shift from traditional office and full-time jobs to flexible, freelance and remote work is spawning more “creative hubs” across the country and other parts of Asia when she realised they could combine their skills in the same space…
The initial business plan was to create a “co-working space”, which has popped up in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and all over Asia, but there’s yet for one to open in Johor Bahru, so Holly and Wei Shen took over a studio space which they designed into an open plan photography studio and kitchen. It didn’t take us long to find our “waze” on a rainy Wednesday afternoon to this inconspicuous two-storey shophouse in Taman Melodies.
We kinda marvelled at their clean, white-washed walls (with a touch of our favourite Tiffany blue) which give off a professional, yet minimalistic feel that doesn’t distract people from their work. The sight of a TIBHAR table tennis table suggests life here is not all work and no play and brought back great memories from the recently concluded T2 APAC Table Tennis competition in town. The highlight, of course, is Holly‘s very own cosy and well-stocked kitchen, where the self-taught baker spends hours crafting those tasty traditional British cakes. Lucky Wei Shen, you’ll never go hungry working in this space.
These days, we’re all food photographers. Whether we just fiddle with filters on Instagram or capturing amazing food photography by interchanging our cameras and lenses for a living, we’ve gotten used to sharing our love of food by taking pictures of it and regularly sharing them online. Luckily for us in JB, an emergence of concept forward eateries have opened up with the food and feel to match such that Holly and Wei Shen “CAN” now put their creativity and imagination into practice, so just bring it on, everything also “can lah” at CAN Kitchen Stories!
Apart from spending time in her kitchen, Holly‘s been working as a restaurant consultant cum “food stylist”, helping local cafes and restaurants achieve an authentic western menu, training the kitchen staff and helping businesses to improve their service and sales.
After all, if a picture says a thousand words, then food photography is worth a thousand flavours! Agreed?
Frankly speaking, the culinary skill and creative eye needed to produce such beautiful cakes never cease to amaze us. If you have been smitten by Holly‘s creations, be sure to place your order at least a week in advance as all her cakes are made-to-order, without any artificial flavours or preservatives to ensure freshness that will evoke an explosion of taste sensations with every mouthful.
Being a big lover of herbs and flowers and using only the best produce and freshest of ingredients sourced locally, Holly found a lot of inspiration online for her fresh flower cakes that would be a perfect match for her English rustic cake vibe. Unlike the popular Japanese style bakeries all over town, Holly loves experimenting with traditional English flavours and combinations of designs that people can’t find in other cafes or restaurants so that her customers can taste the difference in quality and keeps them coming back for more!
更多有关 CAN Kitchen Stories 的作品可点击 cankitchenstories.tumblr.com
Admittedly, as much as we enjoy scrolling through Instagram feeds of beautiful people and places, there’s something extra satisfying about looking at these gorgeous baked goods by Holly. Thankfully, these surreal desserts don’t just exist online and after much persuasion from her regular customers for nearly a year, the much anticipated Festive baking, styling & photography workshop by Holly & Curly finally happened in December, much to the delight of the privileged few who signed up the moment words got out on her Facebook page. Participants got to hand craft their individual cake and bring it home just in time for Christmas!

While most of the attention is on Holly and her baked goods, much credit is also due to Wei Shen, who has always been into food photography and still-life, and the man behind the lens and responsible for the mouthwatering images on CAN Kitchen Stories. Being an avid photographer herself, Holly sometimes helps on his shoots, and in-between baking, while Wei Shen will be camera ready to shoot her cakes before being delivered to their customers.
Driven by hands-on experimentation and constantly looking for new ways to interpret traditional production methods and object morphologies, Wei Shen moves freely between self-produced, limited edition pieces and mass-produced objects, as well as conceptual, experimental and functional projects, as seen from his portfolio on www.weishentan.com.
From the States to Singapore and Saigon, Wei Shen was often mistaken for a Vietnamese from his time on overseas assignment. However, this mistaken identity certainly lends a helping hand and added a global perspective and more international flavours to the talented works of this homegrown talent. Having spent over two years feeling and understanding the local market, Wei Shen is ready to stamp his mark with a strong JB identity to his shots to create a new genre of life photography, be it still or dynamic!
当然，还有那 made with love 的蛋糕。
Thank you, Wei Shen, for capturing arguably your greatest shot by bringing Holly and her fun and friendly English vibes to JB, as well as taking our local bakes and “food”tography to a whole new level. Nothing can be more powerful than a husband-and-wife-team, and we look forward to more great shots, and cakes (of course), to add another delightful icon to the world’s design and culinary map. CAN lah!
