What happens when pop culture and folk traditions collide, at an Internet-less village where virtual social interactions on the information superhighway meets larger-than-life primitive reality on a rural cobble streets and sidewalks? Some might say Error 404 or “connection lost”, but we concur with Italian artist Biancoshock, whom call it Web 0.0.

Civitacampomarano is a small village in the province of Campobasso with just 400 souls, mainly elderly. Internet is practically nonexistent and mobile phones have difficulty working with data connection, so how do these social functions, considered by the vast majority of the urban population as necessary and essential to everyday life, also exist in this part of the country, where the connection is hard to reach?

Here’s some of Biancoshock’s urban interventions to give ‘virtual’ functions to these commonplace analog technologies.

A “facebook wall” has been made into a bulletin board, where updates about the town are displayed. Not so real-time but still works offline, cool isn’t it?

biancoshock_3

A “whatsapp booth” provides a place for residents to make phone calls, but this paid conversation does not include any group chats or video call function though!

A “wetransfer-mobile” delivers packages and goods around town, directly to the homes of the residents. Now that’s really creative.

There’s a “Gmail” is every mailbox, except that sending and receiving mails is not instantaneous and may take days, if not weeks. Acceptable by the local standards?

biancoshock_6

Even the “RSS feed” now comes in the form of a local newspaper LOL!

Need to buy and sell? This “ebay shop” hosts commercial activity for the local community, and it’s actually one-up against this e-commerce giant where you can instantly pick up your purchase on the go!

The local bar is probably the default place go-to place where many residents meet up and exchange knowledge, information and ideas. Do they still actually need “Google”?

biancoshock_8

Residents watch TV and movies in a “youtube theater” staged at a local bar, ad-free too!

biancoshock_9

Meet “Wikipedia”, the ever-reliable old encyclopedia and storyteller of the village.

While many of these virtual technologies are considered to be necessary parts of everyday modern life, Biancoshock demonstrates that there is a sort of Internet “in real life” — that has always existed. Many aspects of communication may now take place through a screen, but these methods of conversation were once places and spaces, where communities would come together by simply meeting at a bar, or gathering in the town’s streets for their regular dose of cultural exchange. Still not convinced? Watch this!
